Rummy is an age-old card game and has been modified as per different cultures, which is why there are variations of rummy. Anyone who plays the rummy game will tell you how unique this card game is and the amount of fun it offers to the players.
Usually, you might have played the classic rummy game, which has been around for more than two centuries, but as we said, there are variations to it, and with every year, this card game has evolved. However, every variant that you will come across will have one thing in common: card melding, otherwise known as the grouping of similar cards.
The rules of these variations will be slightly different; however, the goal remains the same, which is to pick and discard games. So, now, let’s talk about the different variations one by one.
13 Cards Rummy Game
13 cards rummy game had its origin in India and is also called Indian rummy. It is said that Indian rummy or the 13 cards rummy game is the extension of rummy 500 and gin rummy. Indian rummy is played among 2 to 6 players. Each player will get 13 cards, and the player has to arrange the card into valid sets and sequences or sequences to make a valid declaration.
13 cards rummy will also have both printed and wild joker cards. Joker cards can be used as a substitute to form a sequence or set. But the crux is to create one pure sequence, and it is mandatory to create one pure sequence to win the game.
Every card will carry some points. For example, the value cards will be worth their value points. Apart from number cards, face cards and aces will carry 10 points. The agenda is to arrange the cards in such a way that the player has one pure sequence and the rest as an impure sequence and sets and reduces the points to zero to make a valid declaration.
Pool Rummy
In the pool rummy game, players will pool in money. It will have a fixed entry fee, which will become the prize money. Only the winner will stay till the end of this game, while the rest will get eliminated. Pool rummy has two versions- 201 and 101 pool rummy.
In 101 pool rummy, the purpose is to drive the rivals to cross 101 points. When a player collects 101 points, the player gets eliminated. Just like that, you have 201 pool rummy where if a player collects 201 points, they get eliminated.
Indian Marriage or 21 Card Rummy
Card Rummy or Indian Marriage is a popular card game in India and is often played during Indian festivals, such as Diwali, Holi, and Dusshera. It is an extended version of classic rummy and pretty similar to 13 cards rummy game.
In this game, players will play with three decks of cards and printed jokers. Unlike 13 cards rummy game, where players deal with 13 cards, players play with 21 cards in this variation. Players will have to make two pure runs, and the rest of the cards can be in the form of sequences or sets.
What separates 21 card rummy from 13 cards is it besides Joker, players use-value cards. They act like joker cards, which can be used to substitute any card. The reason why these joker cards are unique is that they hold additional points.
Let’s share an example. If 8♠ is a wild joker, a player can use it to create a sequence- 7♠ 8♠ 9♠. In this case, 7♠ 8♠ 9♠ will become the value cards, and if the players have this pair, they can get 20 points from other players. In this sequence, 7♠ will be called a niche, 8♠ is called titlu, and 9♠ is called paplu.
Now, this combination is extra special because it is called the marriage hand, and any player who has 7♠ 8♠ 9♠ will receive 100 points from the rival players. To play a 21 card rummy game, one has to spend good enough time practicing the rules.
Canasta
The word that signifies basket in Spanish is a sort of rummy game that has various varieties relying on the number of players. It is played by four players, in general, and will have two partnerships. Two decks of cards will be used, and there will be four jokers. Every four jokers and all the 2s are treated as trump cards. The target for the players is to shape merges with seven cards of a similar position and ‘go out’ by playing every one of their cards.
Rummikub
Rummikub is a different variation of a rummy game. This variation includes tiles rather than cards and will be played among 2-4 players. This is a popular game both in the U.S. The game uses 104 tiles with numbers 1 to 13 out of 4 distinct shadings like orange, dark, red and blue. In addition, there are two tiles with a similar number and shading. Likewise, there are two jokers.
Players will have a rack where they need to store their tiles so that the cards are not visible to the opponents. First and foremost, players have 14 or 16 tiles, and when it’s their turn, they will have to put down their tiles into runs or sets of at least three tiles. After that, they simply draw a tile if they can’t play. The player who first sets out all his/her tiles is the champ. A significant part of the game is that players are permitted to utilize tiles that have effectively been played.
Gin Rummy
Gin rummy is easy to play and consists of a standard deck with 52 cards. It is a hot top choice among European natives. It is a 2-player game, and every player gets ten cards which must be merged into somewhere around three sequences and sets.
Let’s share an example. You have a set, which is 6♥ 6♦ 6♠ and a sequence, which is 2♥ 3♥ 4♥. You can use a joker card if need be. The cards will be ranked from King and will go till Ace. Face cards will carry 10 points, number cards will carry the face value points, and the Ace card will carry only one point. The one rule that all the players will have to follow is that the sequences have to be from the same suit.
Oklahoma Rummy
It is a well-known variation of the Gin rummy game and can be played by two to four players. It utilizes a standard deck of 52 cards alongside one arbitrarily chosen Joker. Assuming there are two players, the two of them get ten cards each; in the event that players are more, then, at that point, every player receives seven cards.
The Ace holds one point, the face cards convey 10 points each and number cards have a worth equivalent to their number. Players need to merge their cards, and as they do as such, they can dispose of those cards. The player who can discard all their cards becomes the winner.
Kalooki Rummy
An adaptation of Contract Rummy is extremely well known in Jamaica and previous Yugoslavia. In a round of 3-8 players, the number of decks relies on players. Each round of Kalooki is played for nine deals. The agenda is to arrange and meld the card and finally lay all the cards. The player who gets the lowest total score becomes the winner in the end.
500 Rummy or Persian Rummy
This one is also known as Michigan or Pinochle rummy. In most rummy forms, points convey negative worth, yet the player who snatches 500+ points first is the champ in this game. Players get 13 cards for each card, and the rule is to meld the cards properly to earn more points. Points get deducted if the cards are not mixed properly.
Contract Rummy
This is a card game played among three to eight players. It’s an extended version of gin rummy. Multiple decks will be used with 52 cards. Jokers will be included too and will be considered as wild cards. Every player gets ten cards for the first four rounds, and for the last three rounds, players deal with 12 cards.
California or Shanghai Rummy
This is pretty similar to contract rummy and has its origin in China. There will be two standard decks of 52 cards, and the number of deals is 10. Three to five players play this game, and every player gets 11 cards.
Dummy Rummy
Dummy rummy is played among 2-4 players and is quite popular in the U.S. There will be two standard decks and four jokers. In total, there will be 108 cards. All the number two cards become the wild jokers, and every player gets 13 cards.
